ADVERTORIAL — ALUR ATELIER INTERIORS

The furniture you only buy once: why a design studio in Bali still makes every piece by hand, in solid wood

Most furniture is designed to fit a flat box and a price. ALUR pieces are designed for one room and made by hand in solid wood that can stay there for a lifetime.

Most of us own a table that wobbles however often we tighten the bolts. Or a cabinet where the veneer has started to lift at one corner. Or a sofa that looked right in the photo and never fitted the room.

Many of us have replaced the same piece two or three times without ever deciding to. It wore out, or it never quite worked, and the next one came from the same kind of shop.

There is an older, slower way to furnish a home, an office or a hotel. It ends with furniture you do not have to buy again.

What most of us know

  • A table or cabinet that looks worn after a few years
  • Pieces that almost fit, but never exactly
  • Chips and scratches that cannot be repaired
  • Buying the same piece again every few years
  • Rooms that look like everyone else’s

Each of these comes from the way most furniture is made.

What most furniture is made of

A large share of today’s furniture is pressed board, chipboard or MDF, covered with a thin veneer or a printed foil. It is light, it ships flat and cheaply, and it looks good on the first day.

Pressed board cannot be sanded back. Screws work loose in it. Once the foil chips, the board underneath shows, and a repair is rarely worth the cost. So the piece gets replaced.

It is also made to fit a box, so it comes in a handful of standard sizes. Nobody measured your room.

Two things wear it out early: a material you cannot repair and a size that was never yours.

THE ALTERNATIVE

This is ALUR Atelier

ALUR is a design studio and furniture maker in Bali. We design every piece ourselves and make it by hand in our own atelier, in solid wood, mostly teak. Teak is dense and naturally oily, which is why boatbuilders have used it for decks for generations.

Many pieces in the collection are built from layers of solid teak, shaped into one continuous curve, the Executive Desk for example. That curve is how you recognise an ALUR desk or chair from across a room, and it does not follow a trend that will pass.

There is a collection to start from. Most of what we design is made to measure, for residences, offices and hospitality: one design for one room, in its size, shape and finish.

  • Can be sanded back, refinished and repaired

Why it lasts

Solid wood all the way through

The wood on the surface is the wood the piece is made of. Sand out a scratch and you find the same wood underneath.

Built for each design

Each design gets its own construction. In the Executive Desk, for example, layers of teak run in one curve from top to floor instead of panels screwed together. Fewer joints means fewer places to work loose.

Designed for your room

We adjust length, height, depth and shape to the space and the people who use it. The collection is a starting point.

Finished by hand

Light, antique or dark wengé, applied and polished in the atelier. Upholstery in bouclé, textile or full-grain leather. Stone tops on request.

Questions we hear most

What does a piece cost?

Collection pieces cost from €1,150 to €9,900, including VAT; shipping extra. Within the EU we pay the import duties and VAT, so there is nothing to pay on delivery. We quote custom sizes and finishes per project, usually within 24 hours.

Can I order online?

Yes. You pay for a collection piece in full when you order, through the secure checkout or a payment link from the studio. We then make your piece by hand in our atelier.

How long does it take?

About six weeks to make after you order (for custom work, after you approve the design), plus shipping to your address.

Can you make it in my size?

Yes. Most of what we design is made to measure: length, height, depth, shape and finish adjusted to your room.

Where do you deliver?

Worldwide, from our atelier in Bali to your destination. We quote shipping together with the price.

Can I return a piece?

Collection pieces ordered online come with the statutory right of withdrawal. Made-to-measure pieces are excluded from it. That is why we make nothing custom before you have approved the design.

How do I care for solid wood?

Dust it, wipe it with a damp cloth and refresh the finish now and then. Scratches can be sanded out, because the wood underneath is the same wood.
